Voices of Science VII: Univalle Drives Scientific Research with Social Impact Across Bolivia

By Danieal Gorena | Editorial Assistant

The seventh episode of Voices of Science, a podcast produced by Univalle Online in collaboration with the Journal of Latin American Sciences and Culture and hosted by the general producer, Lic. Rafael Portugal featured Magister Jorge Ruiz de la Quintana, National Director of Research at UNIVALLE. During the conversation, Ruiz shared the university’s vision, achievements, and challenges in advancing scientific research across Bolivia’s different regions.

Research Rooted in Community Needs

Among the most notable initiatives, Ruiz highlighted work conducted in the community of Tocaña, where physicians and researchers identified parasitic infections in children linked to a lack of access to clean drinking water. Based on this diagnosis, the team developed proposals to improve public health and contribute to lasting solutions.

He also emphasized projects implemented in Tiquipaya, Cochabamba, focused on recycling and responsible solid waste management, as well as initiatives in the Beni department that leverage business roundtables and partnerships with foundations to drive regional development.

In the southern part of the country, UNIVALLE is engaged in research related to wine production and the study of unique tree species found only in Bolivia, whose genetic richness represents a significant natural and scientific heritage for the nation.

A Homegrown Electric Vehicle

Another milestone discussed during the conversation was the creation of Bolivia’s first electric automobile, developed by UNIVALLE engineers. The project has attracted both national and international interest, serving as a benchmark for technological innovation and demonstrating the scientific capacity of Bolivian professionals.

Building a Science Culture

Ruiz emphasized that one of the institution’s primary objectives is to foster a robust science culture among students, encouraging their active participation in research projects that generate social impact and contribute to the country’s sustainable development.

Regarding scientific literacy, the National Director of Research explained that UNIVALLE is collaborating with the international organization Andean Road Countries for Science and Technology (ARCST), composed of academics from around the world. In this important process, Ruiz acknowledged the work of Dr. Marco Cavero, whose contributions have been essential in strengthening the university’s scientific reach.

An Unprecedented Scientific Journal

Thanks to this international collaboration, UNIVALLE now boasts an unprecedented scientific journal (the Journal of Latin American Sciences and Culture) in Bolivia, with its international editorial board. The publication is disseminated through international academic platforms via the Open Journal Systems platform and is available in English, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese, significantly expanding the global reach of the university’s scientific output.
