China’s Ecological Code goes global: a podcast bridges law and Latin America

By Moiya Sullivan | 15 April 2026

What happens when China’s ambitious environmental legislation meets Latin American legal scholarship? A new episode of Voices of Science sets out to answer exactly that.

The podcast — produced by Univalle Online in Bolivia, in collaboration with the Journal of Latin American Sciences and Culture and the Andean Road Countries for Science and Technology — airs today with a timely and substantive focus. The topic is China’s Ecological and Environmental Code, a sweeping legal framework that seeks to unify and strengthen environmental governance across the world’s second-largest economy. But the lens is distinctly Latin American: what can the region learn from China’s approach?

The guest is Prof. Douglas de Castro, a faculty member at Lanzhou University’s Faculty of Law in China. His work sits at the intersection of Chinese environmental legislation and Latin American legal traditions, making him uniquely positioned to guide this conversation.

Hosted by Lic. Yelka Aguilera, the episode moves beyond surface-level commentary. It examines how a major developing economy legislates for long-term sustainability, and what that might mean for nations facing similar tensions between resource development and environmental protection.
