Green Science Expands Reach Through Interdisciplinary and Educational Strategies

The second episode of Voices of Science, hosted by Prof. Yelka Aguilera, brought together a panel of experts to examine the growing role of green science in addressing environmental challenges. The programme featured Prof. José Pérez, a specialist in technology and sustainability; Prof. Mary Ojeda, a researcher in environmental education; and Prof. Jorge Guevara, a biologist with expertise in interdisciplinary environmental processes.

A central theme of the discussion was the integration of environmental problem-solving with scientific knowledge. Prof. Ojeda noted that the impetus for advancing green science lies in the recognition that environmental stewardship must be coupled with the development of sustainable, long-term solutions. Prof. Guevara elaborated on this point by underscoring the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches. “Engineering, environmental sciences, education, and communication together enable us to develop solutions,” he stated.

Prof. Pérez highlighted the foundational role of education in addressing sustainability challenges, observing that energy inefficiency often results from behavioural patterns rooted in a lack of awareness. In response, the panellists described targeted educational initiatives that leverage technological tools—including mobile applications, interactive resources, and gamified learning—to enhance engagement. A notable example is the video game Biopochito AI, designed to introduce children to environmental concepts through active participation.

The collaborative efforts discussed extend beyond the classroom. New initiatives are planned in Mexico, Chile, China, and Bolivia, including a recently formalized agreement with the Natural History Museum of Bolivia to recover and study a whale skeleton discovered in the region. These projects reflect a broader commitment to expanding the reach of green science and promoting its principles across diverse societal contexts.
