A Conversation with the Composer: Inspiration Behind the Hymn

We sat down with Mateo Silva to discuss what moved him to create “One Planet, One Song.”

Q: Mateo, huge congratulations! What was the central idea that inspired ‘One Planet, One Song’?

Mateo Silva: “Thank you! The theme for World Green Science Day 2025, ‘Building Bridges: Science Culture for a Sustainable Future,’ was my starting point. I kept thinking about how we often see science, culture, and nature as separate things. But in reality, they are deeply connected. In my community, we don’t see science as just data in a lab; it’s in the knowledge of the rainforest, in the traditional ways of farming, in the rhythm of the rivers. I wanted to create a song that felt like a bridge itself—a bridge between different cultures, between traditional wisdom and modern science, and between humanity and our planet. The melody is simple and heartfelt because the message is universal: we all share this one home. No matter where we are from, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the future we want for our children are the same. The song is a reminder that our collective action, guided by both science and a shared cultural love for the Earth, is our only path forward.”

The organizers, the Andean Road Countries for Science and Technology (ARCST), the International Green Science Center for Latin America and the Caribbean (IGSCLAC), the Journal of Latin American Sciences and Culture (JLASC), and the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance, extend their deepest gratitude to all the finalists and everyone who participated and voted.

The winning song, “One Planet, One Song,” will serve as the official soundtrack for World Green Science Day 2025. It will be featured to open and close all significant events, ceremonies, and global activities. Let’s make the world sing together with “One Planet, One Song” for a greener and more sustainable future. The following year could be your song!

Thank you, Mateo, and all who made the competition possible!
